Learney Estate through the eyes of an Architect
Sunday 25th September

Learney Estate |
| Description |
This is an innovative walk - a country walk looking at building styles!
Since the middle of the Eighteenth Century, successive members of one family have owned Learney Estate - first the Brebners, and then it passed through a daughter, to the Innes family. Over that 250-year period, the family has looked after the estate well, with a view to the future, so that it now presents a pleasant appearance, with woods and open pasture facing south looking over Deeside. Since the early 19th century, the family have built a number of houses of sufficient merit that they are now designated as Category B listed buildings (that is buildings of regional or more than local importance, or major examples of a particular period, style or building type). Our walk through the estate policies will be led by a qualified architect, who will be able to point out the interesting features of the listed buildings - Learney House, terraces and potting shed, the Donkey House, the North Lodge and the West Lodge. The village of Torphins includes further listed buildings - including the Parish Church and Learney Arms Hotel, where the walk will end, and you can enjoy a well-earned tea or coffee and scones.
